CSTM announces SBL Press will publish ‘New Testament Abstracts’

First issue of volume 69 slated for publication summer 2026

The Clough School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) have announced that the SBL will assume publication of New Testament Abstracts (NTA) beginning June 1, 2026.

New Testament Abstracts was founded in 1956 at Weston College and later moved to Weston Jesuit School of Theology. It became part of CSTM when the schools were reaffiliated in 2008.

In 2024–2025, CSTM reviewed NTA and its role in New Testament studies today. Following that review, it was determined that, given the changing landscape of academic publishing, there might be a better locus for advancing NTA’s mission. Conversations between CSTM and SBL leaders led to a consensus that NTA was a natural fit within SBL Press’s journal publishing program.

CSTM Dean Michael C. McCarthy, S.J., explained the rationale behind the decision. “For almost 70 years, New Testament Abstracts has been an excellent publication of the highest academic and professional standards,” said Fr. McCarthy. “From its inception, it has been an important work of people like Dan Harrington, S.J., Chris Matthews, and others who have faithfully served CSTM (and its previous institutions) and the field of New Testament studies. In 2026, the Society of Biblical Literature has much greater capacity to bring NTA to new publics.”

As part of the transfer agreement, SBL Press assumed responsibility for all subscriptions already placed. To that end, SBL Press intends to publish the first issue of volume 69 in summer 2026 and to work diligently until NTA is back on schedule. NTA will also remain available in electronic form on the EBSCO platform in partnership with Atla.

SBL Executive Director Steed Vernyl Davidson expressed appreciation and high hopes for the future of NTA. “The membership of SBL and the public at large will derive great value from this product,” said Davidson. “I share my thanks for the work that Boston College and the Clough School of Theology and Ministry has performed over the last decades to steward this gift to the scholarly community.”

NTA subscription or general publication questions may be sent to nta@sbl-site.org.
